Fashion Trend: 5 Ways to Style the Kimono

Kimonos are a trend that's taking over, here are five ways to style them, by Rosa Fairfield

I love the kimono trend, it's being going strong since spring and I've finally added one to my collection... albeit without really meaning to. When I saw this online, it was called a trench so I thought I was ordering a trench coat so was surprised when a kimono arrived. That being said, I absolutely love it, it's such a cute colour and I'm glad it turned out to be a kimono because it was the perfect thing to wear for my boat trip. Here are some styling ideas:

As a cover-up
Kimonos are great for wearing over a bikini or swimsuit, as a coverup, because they are lightweight and dry off quickly. You can also wear them closed, over an outfit, in the transitional Autumn months when it is starting to get a little chilly but you don't want to wear something too heavy. You have no idea how happy I am that it is now acceptable to wear something outside that looks like a bed robe.

Loose and open
This is definitely the most popular choice. Kimonos are great because they are a good long length, which means they look great with pants, skirts and shorts. I think they are a great, slightly more glamorous, alternative for the traditional winter cardigan. Opt for a floaty dress or fringed shorts for a more boho look or for a more glam look, a pair of white wide leg pants or a structured skirt.

Under a jacket
This is one of my favourites for Autumn. You can use a kimono for layering. Add a jacket of a different length over the top of the kimono to make the outfit look a little bit more interesting. It kinda gets boring when you are just wearing the same coat, covering your outfit day in day out, but if you add a kimono underneath it brightens the whole look up.

Half open, half closed
This really does offer the best of both worlds. Leave the kimono open but tie the belt around your waist. That way the kimono is secured and offers more warmth as it gets colder but you can still see some of your outfit underneath. This is a good option for more of an evening look, if you add a few glamorous accessories and a pair of heels.

Around the waist
This works best with a shorter kimono. You know, that classic school girl look of the jumper tied around the waist, well you can do that with a kimono too. It works well because it's a lot less bulky than a jumper. It's a great idea for layering, as you can again wear a jacket over the top. It just adds a little extra colour and interest. It would look great over a pair of jeans.

So, to conclude, I will 100% be adding more kimonos to my wardrobe. I want a silky printed one now too. They are such a great comfy, slouchy item to have in your closet and really are the best of both worlds (being both comfortable and glamorous at the same time).
