Styling advice on how to create an Audrey Hepburn inspired outfit and look completely fabulous, by Rosa Fairfield
Photographs by Linda Smith
This post was completely unintentional. At no point did I think, "I really want to recreate Holly Golightly's outfit from Breakfast at Tiffany's."
In reality, I just put on lots of random items and it ended up looking kind of similar.
Maybe it was a subconscious decision? I have been enjoying a lot of Old-Hollywood movies and tunes lately.
But that's the point. You can't try to fully copy a certain look you like. That is the fine line between fashion and costume. Fashion takes inspiration and creates something new, it doesn't replicate.
My Five Hepburn Styling Tips
1. Highlight your waist
We often associate the 50s and early 60s with teeny tiny waists but you don't need to starve yourself to achieve this. Add a belt around your waist for a more natural look.
If, like me, you struggle to find belts that fit your waist, you can make an extra hole and thread the excess length behind and then through, to secure it.
2. Gloves
Gloves, an accessory also associated with Old-Hollywood glamour. Mine are just modern winter gloves but you can find lots of beautiful, delicate evening gloves in most antique and vintage stores.
Add them to an evening dress for a elegant finishing touch.
3. Pearls & Sunglasses
If you're a regular reader, you will know that these are my two favourite accessories. I much prefer a shorter strand of pearls, or I wrap my long ones around multiple times. It just looks a lot neater.
4. Opaque tights
Okay, so I wear thick wool tights a lot, for particular reasons more than anything else. Opaque ones look so much nicer and add an element of modesty without being excessive.
There's that excitement when you go from wearing woolen tights to obquaue tights, in your school years. It's that classic coming of age moment.
5. Groomed hair with volume
I'm such a fan of that bouffant 60s hair - it looks neat and fun all in one. I'm going to do a video tutorial on how I create this.
Okay, so I know it sounds cheesy, but whilst trying to create the perfect look always remember my favourite Audrey Hepburn quote:
"For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry." Audrey Hepburn
